Is Parsing? Definition and Examples in English Grammar
Parsing is a grammatical exercise that involves breaking down a text
into its component parts of speech with an explanation of the form, function,
and syntactic relationship of each part so that the
text can be understood. The term "parsing" comes from the Latin pars for "part (of speech)."
The word parsing means to
describe a word or words grammatically.
We know all the eight parts of speech. So we can easily find out what
parts of speech each word in a given sentence is.
Look! My old grandpa is
coming to us but slowly.
1. Look! is an interjection.
2. my is a determiner.
3. old is an adjective.
4. grandpa is a noun.
5. is is a helping verb.
6. coming is a verb(4th form)
7. to is a preposition.
8. us is a pronoun.
9. but is a conjunction.
10.slowly is an adverb.
Remember: Parsing means to describe a word or words grammatically, i.e.,
to tell which part of speech each of the word is.
